Prizes are awarded in The Second Biennial Art in Glass Competition

Within the framework of the Santa Lucia 2008 International Festival, the awards ceremony for the Second Biennial Art in Glass Competition took place with the winners being “Hojas Muertas” by Julio Cesar and “Papa-ya-no” by Ana Quiroz in the categories of New Proposals and Contemporary Art respectfully.

The event took place last October 14 in the Vitro’s Glass Museum and was overshadowed by the mourning by all of the Vitro family for the passing of Don Adrián Sada Treviño who was remembered by a minute of silence.

The judges panel consisted of Lucio Bubacco, renowned venetian glass artist, the curator Ana Elena Mallet and the chairperson and artist Mauricio Guajardo Touché.

In the second edition of this festival 178 works of art from 127 different artists competed representing countries such as México, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Chile y España, all participating in the two categories being contested: New Proposals and Contemporary Art.

Each of the winners received an acquisition prize of 100 thousand pesos thanks to the National Council for Culture and Art (CONACULTA) and Vitro Float Glass.

Additionally each first prize winner in each category received, on behalf of the Glass Museum, a commemorative trophy designed by Oscar Ramírez Franco and handcrafted in the renowned Vitro Crystal Workshop.

Beginning October 15th through January 31, 2009 a sampling that includes the artworks from the 53 finalists will be on exhibition at the Glass Museum, including the two winners’ pieces of art.

In this way the Glass Museum reaffirms its commitment and vocation to encourage and promote artists who enjoy finding a form of expression in this material.
